Tokyo is often associated with the bright lights of Shibuya and the skyscrapers of Shinjuku. While these iconic districts are definitely worth visiting, the city has so much more to offer. Tokyo is a collection of very different neighbourhoods, each with its own atmosphere and rhythm.

Some areas feel almost like small villages, while others are ultra-modern and vibrant. During our time in Tokyo, we enjoyed exploring these contrasts and discovering places that show different sides of the city.

Here are some of my favorite neighbourhoods in Tokyo.

Yanaka & Ueno – A glimpse of old Tokyo

Yanaka is one of the few areas of Tokyo that still preserves the atmosphere of the past. Walking through its small streets feels very different from the rest of the city. Traditional houses, small local shops and quiet temples create a peaceful and authentic environment.

Yanaka is the main shopping street, filled with small food stalls, craft shops and local snacks. It’s the perfect place to experience everyday life in Tokyo and find unique souvenirs.

Just a short walk away is Ueno, a lively district known for its large park and museums. Ueno Park is a great place to relax, especially during cherry blossom season when the park becomes one of the most popular hanami spots in Tokyo.

Together, Yanaka and Ueno offer a beautiful contrast between tradition, culture and local life.

Ginza – Tokyo’s modern elegance

If Yanaka represents traditional Tokyo, Ginza shows the city’s modern and sophisticated side.

Known for its luxury boutiques, department stores and stylish architecture, Ginza is one of Tokyo’s most elegant districts. Even if you’re not planning to shop, the area is fascinating to explore thanks to its impressive buildings and lively atmosphere.

In the evening, the neighbourhood becomes even more vibrant, with illuminated streets, restaurants and cocktail bars. It’s a great place to experience Tokyo’s dynamic urban energy.

Tokyo’s green side – Hama-Rikyū Gardens & Shinjuku Gyoen

Despite being one of the largest cities in the world, Tokyo has many beautiful green spaces where you can escape the urban noise.

Hama-Rikyū Gardens is a peaceful oasis located right next to the modern skyline of Shiodome. The contrast between traditional gardens and surrounding skyscrapers makes the place particularly unique. Walking around the ponds and tea houses feels surprisingly calm in the middle of the city.

Another beautiful park is Shinjuku Gyoen, one of the most popular parks in Tokyo. With its large lawns, traditional Japanese gardens and seasonal flowers, it’s a perfect place for a relaxing break after exploring the busy streets of Shinjuku.

Nakameguro – One of Tokyo’s trendiest areas

Nakameguro is a neighbourhood that perfectly mixes trendy cafés, stylish boutiques and a relaxed local atmosphere.

The area is famous for the Meguro River, which becomes spectacular during cherry blossom season when hundreds of sakura trees line the canal. Even outside spring, it’s a lovely place to walk along the water and discover small restaurants, bakeries and coffee shops.

Nakameguro feels modern and creative, making it one of the most pleasant districts to explore in Tokyo.

Shimokitazawa – Tokyo’s vintage and alternative district

Shimokitazawa is one of the most unique neighbourhoods in Tokyo. Known for its vintage shops, second-hand stores and independent cafés, the area has a very relaxed and creative atmosphere.

Unlike the large avenues of central Tokyo, Shimokitazawa is made of small pedestrian streets filled with music venues, thrift stores and quirky boutiques. It’s the perfect place to hunt for vintage clothes or simply wander around without a plan.

The neighbourhood attracts artists, students and creative people, which gives it a very different vibe compared to the more polished districts like Ginza.

Discovering Tokyo through its neighborhoods

One of the best ways to experience Tokyo is simply to explore its neighbourhoods. Each district offers a different perspective on the city, from traditional streets and quiet temples to modern architecture and trendy cafés.

Taking the time to wander, get lost in small streets and discover local spots is what makes Tokyo such a fascinating place to visit.

And while famous areas like Shibuya and Shinjuku are part of the Tokyo experience, these neighbourhoods reveal some of the city’s most memorable and authentic moments.
