After spending our first days in Seoul, we started exploring the South Korean countryside. Our first stop was Sokcho, a charming city located on the northeast coast.
Sokcho – Beach, Markets & National Park
To go to Sokcho, we took a bus from the Seoul Express Bus Terminal. Is about 2/3 hours driving depending on traffic conditions. The bus is very confortable, quiet and one time.
We booked it online in advance with Klook. We can also easly go to the station to book your ticket directly. It’s approximately 13 euros.
In Sokcho, the main attractions are:
- Sokcho Beach – a relaxing place to walk and enjoy the sea
- Abai Village – a village created by North Korean immigrants during the war
- Sokcho Fishery Market and Daepohang Fish Market – perfect for local seafood
- Yeonggeumjeong Sunrise Pavilion – a great spot to watch the sunrise or sunset
We think 2–3 days are enough to enjoy the city.
One day to explore Sokcho and enjoy the beach
One day to visit Seoraksan National Park
From the city center, you can take bus #7 or 7-1 to Seoraksan National Park. The park is well maintained, with trails for all levels. Hiking there is a must if you love nature. I suggest to come here really early during week-end it can be really crowded.
After 3 days in Sokcho, with two of them rainy, we took another bus to Andong. The journey included a short ride back to Seoul and then a bus to Andong. We also booked our tickets with Klook.
Andong – Traditional Village Life
Andong is a small town in the center of South Korea, famous for the Hahoe Traditional Village. This village feels like stepping back in time. You can take a bus from Andong city center to the village in about one hour.
We really enjoyed the village, but you should arrive early, as it is a popular attraction. Hahoe Village is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
We didn’t visit the Andong city center or its famous bridge, since we only spent one day there. In our opinion, the city itself isn’t as interesting as the village.
Gyeongju – History and Temples
Our next stop was Gyeongju, a beautiful city that was once the capital of ancient Korea.
You can stay 1–2 days in Gyeongju. The city is peaceful, with a lovely park full of flowers and some charming streets. Gyeongju is famous for its temples : Donggung Palace & Wolji Pond / Woljeonggyo Bridge, which are especially beautiful at night when they are lit up.
We stayed in this Airbnb, a bit fare from the main attraction but free bike are available.
For food we tried pork BBQ and eel dinner. It was delicious.
